Overview
Fish Translator ("we", "us", the "platform") operates fishtranslator.com and related subdomains. This policy explains, in plain English, what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We work toward compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and COPPA, and we honor the rights listed below.
We do not sell your personal information. We run our own ad system, so we do not load Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or third-party tracking scripts.
Data We Collect
Account information
- Email address
- Username
- Birth year (used to verify you are 13 or older)
- Hashed password (we never see your plain-text password)
Activity data
- Pages viewed on the platform
- Listings you create in the gear marketplace
- Catch logs, water conditions, and hatch reports you submit
- Leaderboard scores and tournament participation
Location
- Only collected if your browser grants permission
- Used to show events near you and relevant local ads
Ad interactions
- Impressions (which ad slots loaded a creative)
- Clicks
- Slot-type frequency (for enforcing daily caps)
Partner click-throughs
- When you click a Bass Pro Shops product link, we record that click for attribution
How Ad Targeting Works
Ad targeting happens entirely on our servers. Advertisers never see your name, email, or account details. They only see aggregate numbers — impressions served and click-through rates.
We may choose which ad to show you based on:
- The first three digits of your postal code (zip prefix)
- Your state
- Species you’ve declared interest in (e.g., bass, trout, walleye)
- Your skill level
- Demographic track you’ve selected (if any)
That match happens in our database before the ad is served. The advertiser receives only aggregate CTR and impression counts.
Partner Click-Throughs (Bass Pro Shops)
Fish Translator partners with Bass Pro Shops. When you click a partner product link:
- The click routes through our server endpoint
/api/partners/:key/click - We append our affiliate tag to the outbound URL
- You are redirected to Bass Pro Shops
No personally identifying information is transferred. Bass Pro Shops sees standard referral traffic, not your identity on our platform.
Your Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
We work toward compliance with GDPR and CCPA and honor the following rights:
- Access: Request a full copy of your data via
GET /api/profile/me - Portability: Your export is returned as JSON you can keep
- Deletion: Request account and data deletion via
DELETE /api/profile(endpoint coming — in the interim, email us) - Correction: Edit your profile in your account settings
- Opt-out of targeted ads: We are adding an in-account toggle; you will still see ads, but they will not be personalized
Children (COPPA)
Fish Translator is intended for users aged 13 and older. During signup we require your birth year. If the computed age is under 13, the account is rejected with an explanation.
We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we ever discover a child account, we purge it. A parent-assisted signup is planned for the future.
Security
Passwords are stored as bcrypt hashes. Session tokens are signed with HS256 and expire after 7 days. We use HTTPS for all traffic. No system is perfectly secure — if you suspect account compromise, contact us immediately.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the platform evolves. Material changes will be announced in-product and via email. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.
